This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

We present a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of scary movies: Get comfortable with your significant other and watch Together. The 2025 indie hit recently had its online premiere on Hulu. On the surface, it may seem like conventional biological terror, but inside Together resides a intense meditation about how we choose to love our partners.

A Directorial Debut Delving into The Nuances of Love

Together is the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, partners that have been together for ten years. Having wed in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a unique chemistry to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The plot starts when the couple relocate from the urban environment to the countryside for her career. A familiar narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the cliches conclude. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists tumble into an subterranean cavern. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence begins influencing the duo. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a methodically building fright fest, weaving in bits of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes during something horrific). Shanks skillfully blends these components expertly and delivers them in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is suffering due to a emotional and physical gap. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and distant from his social circle. He is terrified of the notion of totally forfeiting his individual identity in Millie. This fear is intensified by the fact he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he avoids making Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

Both characters grapple with the kind of problems that come with long-term unions after ten years. Deep down, they continue to care for one another. They still laugh together, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of excessive reliance and fully committing to another person, the symbolism avoids being hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a powerful case for staying single. On the other hand, some couples having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could function as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the finale inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply look at your other half and utter, “I understand that choice”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can experience today.

Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
