The Australian skipper has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.
The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.
Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.
Previous updates from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches kicking off on November 21 in Western Australia.
Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and remained hopeful about his chances of participating.
"We know that the clock is ticking and various factors at play, not only his injury, but further aspects," he commented.
"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a significant role. With luck it's the first Test. Otherwise, we'll adjust."
Previous Setbacks
The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand recently after medical tests showed a lower back issue.
Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from several home seasons in a limited period.
Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the contest.
He mentioned that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the first Test.
Contingency Plans
Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.
All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against India as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.
He labeled it as a "small issue and confirmed that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."
"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the first Test as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.
"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs in any case. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
