Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for several hours when numerous of them entered the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations impacting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
Since January, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that this activity become not financially viable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Recent incidents in nearby states have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
